TL;DR: In Figma vs Claude Design, the right pick depends on how you work. Claude Design turns a chat into prototypes, slides and one-pagers, is included on every Claude plan including Free, and hands designs straight to Claude Code. Figma is still the stronger tool for precise canvas editing, shared design systems and real-time team collaboration, with paid seats from $16 a month. Many teams will use both: Claude Design for fast first drafts, Figma for polished, production-ready work.
The Figma vs Claude Design question barely existed six months ago. Then on April 17, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Design as an Anthropic Labs product, and design teams started asking whether a chat window could replace a canvas. Since then, Anthropic has moved Claude Design out of research preview and into every Claude plan. Here’s how the two compare in October 2026, and when each one makes sense.

What is Claude Design?
Claude Design pairs a conversation with a canvas. You describe a screen, deck or flyer, Claude builds a first version beside the chat, and you refine it through conversation, inline comments or direct edits. At launch, Anthropic said it was powered by Claude Opus 4.7 and listed uses such as interactive prototypes, product wireframes, pitch decks and marketing collateral.
A few features matter most for designers:
- Your brand, built in. Anthropic says Claude reads your codebase and design files during onboarding to build a design system, then applies your colors, typography and components automatically.
- Imports. You can start from a prompt, upload images or DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files, point it at a codebase, or capture elements from your live website.
- Handoff. When a design is ready, Claude packages a handoff bundle you can pass to Claude Code to build.
According to Anthropic’s help center, Claude Design is now a template you can start from any chat, from Claude Code or from the Artifacts tab. It’s on by default for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and the old standalone site at claude.ai/design closes on December 14, 2026.
What Figma does better
Figma is a full design platform, not a generator. Its plans cover Figma Design, Figma Make, Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Sites and more. Where it clearly leads:
- Precision. Pixel-level control over layout, auto layout, components and variants.
- Team design systems. Shared libraries and variables that whole product teams maintain.
- Real-time collaboration. Multiple designers working in the same file at once. A Layer3 Labs comparison says Anthropic describes Claude Design’s simultaneous editing as basic and that it has no version history yet.
- Developer workflow. Dev Mode and Figma’s MCP server, which needs a Full or Dev seat, let tools like Claude Code read design context and write back to the canvas.
Figma has its own AI, too. Figma Make turns prompts and canvas assets into interactive apps you can publish to a URL or custom domain. It runs on monthly AI credits.

Pricing: Figma vs Claude Design
Claude Design has no separate price. Anthropic’s product page says it’s included on every plan, including Free, and the help center says it now draws from the same usage pool as the rest of Claude. Earlier it had its own weekly allowance. Big projects with large codebases or many iterations use more of your limit.
Figma’s pricing page lists:
- Starter: free, with 150 AI credits a day up to 500 a month.
- Professional: $16 a month for a Full seat with 3,000 AI credits, $12 for a Dev seat and $3 for a Collab seat.
- Organization: $55 a month per Full seat, billed annually.
- Enterprise: $90 a month per Full seat, billed annually.
Layer3 Labs, citing Figma’s credit guide, says a small edit like changing a font costs about 30 credits, while generating an app from scratch takes 100 or more, and unused credits don’t roll over.
Which should you choose?
Choose Claude Design if you:
- Are a founder, PM or marketer who needs a deck, landing page draft or clickable prototype quickly
- Don’t have paid Figma seats and don’t want to learn a pro design tool
- Already use Claude Code and want design-to-code handoff in one place
Choose Figma if you:
- Are a product designer maintaining a design system across teams
- Need precise control, version history and reliable multiplayer editing
- Hand off to engineers through Dev Mode or the Figma MCP server
Using Figma and Claude Design together
For most teams, it isn’t either-or. A practical workflow is to explore a dozen directions in Claude Design, export the strongest to HTML or hand it to Claude Code, then refine components and layouts on Figma’s canvas. Layer3 Labs notes that Anthropic hasn’t published a native export from Claude Design into Figma files, so the bridge today runs through code and Figma’s MCP server.
The market noticed the overlap. Layer3 Labs, citing Gizmodo, says Figma’s stock fell about 7% after Claude Design launched, and TechCrunch reported that Anthropic’s chief product officer Mike Krieger had left Figma’s board three days earlier.

The verdict
In Figma vs Claude Design, Claude Design wins on speed and cost for first drafts, decks and prototypes, especially if you already pay for Claude or use the Free plan. Figma wins on precision, collaboration and long-lived design systems. If design is your job, keep Figma and add Claude Design for exploration. If design is something you do occasionally, Claude Design may be all you need.
