To request a refund for an eligible Apple digital purchase, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose Request a refund, select the reason and item, and submit. Apple reviews the request; submitting it does not guarantee approval. Cancel an unwanted subscription separately so that you also address future renewals.
Before starting, identify who actually billed you. Buying something on an iPhone does not always mean Apple processed the payment. This guide covers the official Apple route for apps, in-app purchases, subscriptions and other eligible digital content, rather than returns of a physical iPhone or Mac.
Find the purchase and the correct account
Look for the receipt and compare the item name, date and amount with the charge you want to query. A familiar app may have several purchases associated with it, including an initial download, an in-app upgrade and a recurring subscription. Select the transaction that matches the problem.
If you use more than one Apple Account, check which account appears on the receipt. Keep a simple note of the purchase date and order reference for your own records. You do not need to post those details publicly or send your password to a person offering to obtain a refund for you. Before changing your Apple ID, record which account made the purchase so you can follow the refund request from the correct account.
Submit the refund request
- Open Apple’s Report a Problem website in a browser.
- Sign in with the Apple Account associated with the purchase.
- Open the menu labeled I’d like to and select Request a refund.
- Choose the reason that accurately describes the situation and continue.
- Select the relevant purchase or purchases.
- Submit the request and retain any acknowledgment for your records.
This is the process in Apple’s refund instructions. Use an honest reason. If the issue is that an app does not work, describe that issue rather than selecting a different explanation because a stranger says it is more likely to succeed.
Cancel a subscription you no longer want
A refund concerns an existing charge. Cancellation concerns future renewal. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, choose Subscriptions, select the subscription and use Cancel Subscription if available. Apple’s cancellation guide explains the official device and web options.
Read the confirmation and expiration information rather than assuming the absence of a button means the app is malfunctioning. If another family member owns the subscription, they may need to manage it from their account. If the company bills you directly, use that company’s cancellation process.
For example, requesting a refund for an unwanted monthly charge should be followed by checking the subscription’s renewal status. Record both outcomes separately: “refund request submitted” and “renewal canceled.” That prevents a successful request from obscuring an ongoing billing arrangement.
If the purchase does not appear
Check the receipt first, then try the correct Apple Account. A pending transaction may not yet be available for a refund request. If a family organizer is reviewing purchases charged to the shared payment method, the Report a Problem account selector may help identify the relevant purchase.
Also check whether the receipt is from Apple or from the app developer, another marketplace or a different provider. An Apple device can be used to make a purchase that Apple did not bill. In that case, the company identified on the receipt is the sensible first contact.
Do not submit a request for a similarly priced item simply because the correct charge is missing. That creates a second issue without resolving the first. Keep the amount and receipt together, then use official support if you cannot match them.
Check the decision and payment status
Apple says to allow 24 to 48 hours for an update. Return to Report a Problem and choose Check Status of Claims when that option is shown. A pending claim means the review is still underway, not that your payment provider has already received the money.
Apple’s refund-status guidance separates the decision from payment processing. If approved, store credit can take up to 48 hours, mobile-phone billing can take 30 to 60 days, and other payment methods can take up to 30 days to show the refund. Check the current guidance for the payment method used.
Keep the confirmation and compare the eventual credit with the original charge. Calling repeatedly does not make the review or banking process faster. If the documented period has passed, use the appropriate support route with your existing reference rather than creating multiple overlapping requests.
Prepare a clear support request
If the website cannot handle your situation, start from Apple’s official support page. Explain what you bought, what went wrong, whether you already submitted a request and what the current status says. This helps avoid repeating the same steps without progress.
A useful private note might read: “I requested a refund for the subscription renewal on this date. The request is approved, but the original payment method has not shown the credit after the stated processing window.” That is more actionable than “Apple took my money.” Keep card numbers and verification codes out of ordinary messages.
If you do not recognize the purchase at all, review your account and family purchases before assuming fraud. If it remains unfamiliar, use Apple’s support and account-security channels. Never install a remote-control tool or share a sign-in code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly claiming to arrange the refund.
Frequently asked questions
Is an Apple refund automatic?
No. Eligible purchases can be submitted for review, and Apple decides the request. The available outcome depends on the purchase and applicable terms.
Does deleting an app cancel its subscription?
Do not rely on deletion to stop billing. Check the subscription directly in your account and complete the cancellation process.
Can I request the refund from another phone or a computer?
Yes. The official website works through a browser. Sign in to the account that made the purchase rather than assuming the device itself identifies the order.
Why is an approved refund not in my bank account yet?
Approval and payment processing are separate stages. Check the processing window for your original payment method and follow Apple’s status guidance.
