To delete a TikTok Story, open your active Story from your profile photo, select the Story item you want to remove, swipe up and choose Delete, then confirm. TikTok also describes a deletion route through the Share button at the bottom of the Story. Make sure you are viewing your own Story, not a regular profile video or someone else’s post.

Stories normally remain available for 24 hours, but you do not need to wait for that period to end. Removing an accidental upload is most straightforward when you identify the correct item first. If you posted several Story items, check them individually instead of assuming that deleting one removes the entire sequence.

Check that it is actually a Story

A Story and a regular TikTok post are different publishing formats. A Story is viewed through the account’s Story presentation, including the profile-photo entry point. A normal video on your profile grid has its own post-management controls. Following instructions for one while viewing the other is a common reason the expected button seems to be missing.

Open Profile and confirm the username at the top of the screen. This matters if you manage more than one account. Then tap your profile photo to view your active Story. Look at the image or video, its place in the sequence and any visible timing information before removing anything. If the item is actually another creator’s video that you shared, use the steps for undoing a TikTok repost rather than the Story controls.

Delete the selected Story

  1. Open the TikTok mobile app and go to your own Profile.
  2. Tap your profile photo to open the active Story.
  3. Move to the particular photo or video that you want to remove.
  4. Swipe up and look for Delete. Alternatively, open the Story’s Share controls and find Delete there.
  5. Tap Delete and confirm the removal when prompted.
  6. Return to your profile and reopen the Story to check the remaining items.

These routes follow TikTok’s Stories help page. The arrangement of controls can differ between app versions. If an older tutorial tells you to look for three dots but your screen has a Share arrow, use the controls actually shown by your current app.

Do not rush through the confirmation if several similar images were posted together. A screenshot of the wrong draft and the intended final graphic can look nearly identical at thumbnail size. Open the item fully and read the visible text before confirming.

What deletion can and cannot accomplish

Deleting a Story removes that item from the Story you are managing. It should not be treated as a way to erase every copy that anyone may have made. Someone could already have viewed, recorded or shared information from it. This is especially relevant when the post contained an address, private message or other sensitive detail.

If you accidentally exposed sensitive information, first remove the item and then assess what additional action is appropriate. For example, a password visible in a recording should be changed through the relevant service. Deleting the recording alone does not make an exposed password private again.

Keep expectations realistic about expiration too. Waiting 24 hours is a visibility timer for the Story format, not a guarantee that nobody has retained its contents. If a post should not remain visible, remove it directly rather than relying on the clock.

If the Delete option is missing

Start with the account and content checks. Are you signed into the account that published the Story? Are you inside an active Story rather than looking at a thumbnail? Is the item still active? A screen used for viewing another creator’s Story will not provide the same ownership controls.

Close the Story and reopen it from your own profile. Check both the swipe-up route and the Share menu. If the app appears stuck, make sure you have a working internet connection and install any available TikTok update from your device’s official app store. Then reopen TikTok and try again.

Do not begin by clearing app data or reinstalling if you have drafts you need to preserve. Local drafts and published Stories are different things. A drastic troubleshooting step can create an additional problem without resolving which screen you were viewing.

If the control remains unavailable, use TikTok’s Report a problem guidance. Describe the account, the type of item and which deletion controls are missing. Avoid sending passwords or security codes in a support description.

Check the result carefully

After confirming deletion, return to your profile and reopen the Story. Advance through the remaining items. This check distinguishes successful removal of one item from a mistaken assumption that every item disappeared.

If you also published the same clip as an ordinary post, that separate copy needs its own decision. Removing a Story should not be assumed to remove a video posted elsewhere on your account, a downloaded copy on your phone or a version shared to another service.

When you want to keep a personal copy, save the original media before deletion if you still have access to it and are entitled to retain it. Do not rely on an undocumented recovery method. If the material is important, confirm that the file opens in your device’s gallery before removing the published version.

A safer posting routine

Before posting a replacement, preview the entire clip with sound. Check the background for personal information, inspect the caption and confirm which account is selected. A brief review can catch a screen notification, visible customer name or accidental last frame.

For business accounts, maintain a small approval record containing the final file and caption. This makes it easier to distinguish the approved version from an early draft. If you publish several items, use descriptive file names instead of relying on an almost identical row of camera-roll thumbnails.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to wait 24 hours to remove a Story?

No. You can use the Story’s Delete control before it expires. Confirm the selected item and check the remaining sequence after removal.

Will deleting a Story delete the original video on my phone?

A published Story and a separate original file are different copies. Check your gallery directly if you need the original. Do not confuse that file with an unsaved draft inside an app.

Can I delete somebody else’s Story?

You manage your own account’s content. If another account’s Story violates TikTok’s rules or exposes your information, use the appropriate reporting process rather than expecting an owner-style Delete button.

Why do older tutorials show different buttons?

App interfaces change and features can vary between accounts. Use TikTok’s official Story instructions and check the available swipe-up or Share controls instead of searching only for a particular icon from an old screenshot.
