To change your iPhone’s device name for AirDrop, open Settings, tap General, choose About, and edit Name. People who already have you saved as a contact may still see the name associated with their contact information.

That second detail explains why renaming the phone sometimes appears not to work. The device’s name and the identity a contact recognizes are related to different parts of the sharing process. Start with the device setting, then check what the other person actually sees.

Rename the iPhone

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone you want to rename.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Open About.
  4. Tap Name.
  5. Replace the old name with a clear new one.
  6. Return to the previous screen and confirm the new name appears.

Apple’s iPhone naming guide explains that this name is used by AirDrop and other features, including Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot. It is a device setting, rather than a separate AirDrop account.

Watch the Naming Walkthrough

This Solve Your Tech video shows the name setting on iPhone. Its menus come from an earlier iOS version, so use the current labels on your own device if the layout differs. An AirDrop display name is different from your Apple ID account details, so choose the setting that matches what you want other people to see.

Choose a Name You Can Recognize

A useful device name helps you distinguish one phone from several nearby devices. “Alex’s work iPhone” is more informative than leaving every family device with the same generic name.

Keep it short enough to read in a list. If you use several devices for work, a consistent pattern can help: a first name, a role and the device type. You do not need a phone’s full purchase description to identify it.

Also consider where the name may appear. Avoid putting a home address, private phone number or other unnecessary personal detail into a device name that may be visible while using nearby-sharing features.

Why Contacts May See a Different Name

AirDrop can recognize people through saved contact information. Apple explains that Contacts Only sharing depends on the relevant Apple Account email address or phone number being included in a contact card.

Apple’s AirDrop security documentation describes how recognized contact identity is presented. A friend who has you saved under a nickname may therefore see familiar contact details rather than the exact device label you just entered.

Before changing several settings, ask the sender or recipient what they see. Is it your contact name, a generic device name or another phone entirely? That one question can prevent unnecessary changes to your Apple Account or address book.

Renaming Does Not Change Receiving Permissions

Your device name is not the same as the setting that determines who can discover or send to you. Renaming the phone will not automatically make it visible to everyone nearby.

If a transfer is not working, check the current AirDrop receiving setting on both devices and follow Apple’s nearby-sharing instructions. Use the access level appropriate for the transfer, then return to your preferred setting afterward.

Do not broaden receiving permissions simply to see a new name in a list. First confirm that the devices are in range and that the person sending the file is using the right recipient. Naming and discovery are separate troubleshooting questions.

Test With a Harmless File

After renaming, ask a trusted person nearby to check the recipient list. Use an ordinary test picture or another file that contains no private information.

Make sure the intended recipient is ready to confirm what appears. In a busy office or classroom, several devices can look similar. Agree on the name beforehand instead of tapping an unfamiliar entry because it is closest to what you expected.

When the transfer arrives, open the item to confirm that it reached the correct phone. If you need help finding a saved document afterward, review our guide to finding downloads and saved files on iPhone.

What to Check If the Old Name Remains

Return to Settings and confirm that the new device name was saved. Then close and reopen the sharing view on the other device so that you are checking a fresh list rather than an already-open panel.

Check whether the other person already has your details in Contacts. If their display is based on contact identity, changing your device label may not produce the result you expected. Avoid deleting useful contact records simply to force a cosmetic change.

If you own several Apple devices, inspect which one you renamed. A nearby iPad or older iPhone can still appear under its own name. Read the device list carefully before deciding that the new setting has failed.

Keep Work and Personal Devices Clear

Names matter most when you regularly move files between multiple devices. A consistent system makes it easier to select the right recipient and explain a problem to someone helping you.

For a small team, agree on a naming pattern that identifies a device without exposing sensitive details. If the phones are managed by an employer, check whether the organization controls the setting before attempting to override it.

When you sell or hand over a device, renaming alone is not a complete transfer process. Follow the appropriate account and device-preparation instructions separately. A friendly new label does not remove personal files or change ownership.

A Quick Checklist Before Your Next Transfer

  • Confirm the new name appears in Settings.
  • Check the intended recipient’s contact identity.
  • Use an appropriate receiving setting.
  • Choose a harmless test file first.
  • Ask the recipient to confirm the item arrived.
  • Keep personal details out of the device name.

This takes less time than changing account details at random. Most naming confusion becomes easier to understand once you separate the device label from contact recognition and receiving permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does renaming AirDrop change my Apple Account name?

Changing the device name in About does not rename your Apple Account. They are different settings with different purposes.

Why does a friend still see my nickname?

They may be seeing the identity saved in Contacts. Ask them which name appears before changing anything else.

Will the new name affect Personal Hotspot?

Apple lists Personal Hotspot among the features that use the iPhone’s device name, so review the name with those uses in mind.

Can renaming fix every AirDrop problem?

No. Discovery, permissions, contact information and device conditions can affect a transfer independently of the name.
