You can change your Snapchat username in Settings, but Snapchat limits the change to once every 12 months. Open your account settings, find Username under your account information, choose Change Username and follow the prompts. Your display name is separate and can be changed more freely.

Decide which name you actually want to change before proceeding. The username is your unique account identifier. The display name is the friendlier label people see in places such as Chat and your profile. Updating the display name may solve a spelling or branding problem without using the annual username change. Changing a username is separate from making a public profile on Snapchat; check each setting against what you want people to find.

Check the two names first

Open your profile and note the username currently associated with the account. Look at the display name as well. If your aim is to add a surname, remove an old nickname or show a business name more clearly to existing friends, the display-name setting may be the appropriate place.

If you need a different searchable handle or are changing the username you publish on other websites, use the username route. Plan it carefully: Snapchat’s official instructions define the restriction as 12 months to the day since the last username change, rather than a reset at the start of a new calendar year.

Change the username

  1. Open Snapchat and your profile or account area.
  2. Tap the gear icon to enter Settings.
  3. Open My Account where your version groups account information.
  4. Find Username, then choose Change Username.
  5. Enter the new handle and proceed through the availability checks.
  6. Read the warning about the change limit.
  7. Enter your password when requested and confirm.
  8. Return to the profile and check the new username carefully.

Some versions place account information directly in Settings; newer layouts can group it under headings such as Shortcuts and Change My Info. Follow the Username label rather than expecting every tutorial to have the same number of intermediate taps.

Do the change on your own device through Snapchat. A website claiming to sell a username-change bypass does not become trustworthy because it asks for the same information as an official login screen.

Choose a name you can keep

Make a short list before opening the confirmation flow. Check spelling, pronunciation and how the name looks without spaces. If you use the same brand across several services, compare the exact handles first so that a small difference does not confuse followers.

Snapchat provides username format rules, including a length of three to fifteen characters and restrictions on permitted characters. Use the live validation in the app as the final check. An unavailable handle and an invalid format are different problems; changing a character can solve one without solving the other.

A practical choice avoids temporary jokes, a year you may soon outgrow and private details you do not want strangers to know. If the account represents a project, consider whether the name will still fit when that project expands slightly. A twelve-month limit makes this small planning step worthwhile.

Change the display name instead

For a display-name update, return to your account information and choose Name rather than Username. Enter the label you want people to see, then save it. Review the profile afterward so you know which field changed.

Display names do not need to be unique, which makes them more flexible but less useful as a unique account address. If you tell someone how to find you, giving the current username or a verified profile-sharing route reduces the risk of confusion with another person using the same display name.

For example, changing “Sam” to “Sam Carter” is a display-name decision. Replacing an old handle with a new professional handle is a username decision. Writing down those two goals separately can prevent an unnecessary annual change.

What happens to the rest of your account?

Snapchat’s username-change announcement explains that changing the username does not mean starting a new account and describes continuity for Snapcodes, Streaks, Scores and Memories. You should not need to create a replacement account merely to use the supported change feature.

Still, review any external places where you typed the old username manually. A social bio, printed card, website contact page or saved message can continue showing the old text until you edit it. Keep a list and update each reference, especially if the account is used for customer inquiries.

Afterward, ask a trusted contact to confirm that the new handle is clear. That is a useful communication check, not a reason to share your password. If you manage a brand, record who made the change and where the new handle has been published.

If Snapchat will not accept the change

Read the message on screen. It may indicate that the annual waiting period has not ended, the requested handle is unavailable, the format is invalid or authentication needs attention. Each explanation calls for a different next step.

For a timing restriction, use the date of the previous change rather than assuming January 1 starts a new allowance. For an unavailable name, choose a suitable alternative. For a password problem, use Snapchat’s official account-recovery process instead of guessing repeatedly or giving login details to a stranger.

Make sure your app is updated through the official app store. If you are a Snap Star, Snapchat says a username change requires the relevant request process. Do not expect the ordinary account workflow to cover every verified creator account situation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my username twice in the same year?

The standard restriction is once every twelve months to the day. A calendar-year interpretation can be misleading: a change in December does not automatically allow another in January.

Can two people use the same display name?

Yes. The display name is not a unique identifier. The username distinguishes the account, so check the exact handle when finding someone with a common name.

Should I create a new account to change my name?

Use the supported name settings first. Creating another account introduces separate friends, access and account-management work. It is usually unnecessary when the existing account is eligible for the requested change.

Will old text links and printed usernames update themselves?

Text you published outside Snapchat should be reviewed manually. Even when account features continue working, an old handle in a website bio can confuse people. Update important references and test how a new visitor would find you.
