TL;DR: The best AI tools for college students right now are mostly free if you claim the right offer. US college students can get Google AI Pro free for a year, students in 140+ other countries get Google AI Plus free for a year, and US students can still claim four months of ChatGPT Plus until October 31, 2026. GitHub Copilot Student, Notion Education and Figma for Education are free too. Claude and Canva Pro are free only if your school pays, and Perplexity, Grammarly and Mistral are discounts, not freebies.
Finding the best AI tools for college students in 2026 is mostly a deadline problem. The big AI companies are competing hard for students, but their offers change every semester, some need a card and renew at full price, and several popular deals have quietly ended. We checked the current student pages and summaries below so you can claim what’s worth having and skip what isn’t.
Most of the offer details come from Google’s student announcement and SaaSTrials’ October 2026 student-offer tracker, which quotes each company’s own terms. Always confirm on the vendor’s page before you sign up.

1. Google AI Pro or AI Plus: best overall free deal
Google’s offer is the most generous one available. On August 19, 2026, Google announced one year of Google AI Pro free for eligible US college students, a plan it values at $19.99 a month. Google says it includes 4x higher Gemini usage limits than non-subscribers, Gemini in Gmail and Google Docs, and 5 TB of storage. Students outside the US get one year of Google AI Plus instead, which Google says includes 2x higher limits and 400 GB of storage.
Fine print: you need a valid payment method, you must redeem by December 31, 2026, and the plan renews automatically unless you cancel. The AI Plus offer isn’t available in the US, Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong or Tunisia.
Even without paying, every Gemini user gets the new student hub at gemini.google.com/students, with study notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes built from your own lecture notes. Google says Gemini can also add exam and assignment dates from your syllabus to Google Calendar, with your permission.
2. ChatGPT Plus: best if you’re in the US and act fast
OpenAI’s student offer gives current full-time and part-time US college and graduate students four months of ChatGPT Plus, according to its help center as quoted by SaaSTrials. The claim deadline is October 31, 2026, a card is required, and it renews at $20 a month. It’s Plus, not Pro; there’s no free ChatGPT Pro for students. Not sure which assistant suits you? Our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison breaks down the differences.
3. GitHub Copilot Student: best for coding classes
Students verified through GitHub Education get Copilot Student free. GitHub says verified students “get free access to Copilot’s features.” If you’re in computer science, this is the one to claim first; JetBrains also gives students its IDEs free for the length of their studies.

4. Claude: best free plan for long readings and slides
Anthropic doesn’t sell a student discount to individuals. Claude Pro comes free only through Claude for Education, a plan your university pays for. The free plan is still useful: Anthropic says Claude Design, Claude Slides and Claude Docs are included on every plan, including Free, which helps when a group presentation is due tomorrow.
5. Perplexity, Grammarly and Mistral: discounts, not freebies
- Perplexity Education Pro costs $10 a month with SheerID verification. It’s good for cited web research, but you still have to check the sources yourself.
- Grammarly Pro is 50% off for one billing period for verified students, and Grammarly’s free plan stays open to everyone.
- Mistral Pro is $5.99 a month for verified students, down from $14.99.
- Microsoft 365 Personal is $4.99 a month for students, half price, and Microsoft says it includes Copilot and 1 TB of storage. Students with a school email can also get Office 365 A1 web apps free.

6. Free design and notes tools worth adding
Notion’s Education Plan is free with a college email, with yearly verification. Figma gives students its Professional plan for a year, then you reapply. Canva Pro is different: university students only get it if their school has Canva for Campus; otherwise it’s Canva Free.
Student offers that have ended
Plenty of websites still promise these, but SaaSTrials found they’re gone from the companies’ own pages:
- Colab Pro for Education (Google says it’s closed to new signups)
- Cursor’s free year of Pro for students
- Microsoft 365 Premium free for 12 months
How to use AI in college without getting burned
- Check your course policy first. Rules on AI vary by professor and by assignment.
- Set a cancel reminder. The free Google and OpenAI plans renew at full price.
- Verify every fact and citation. AI tools can produce confident errors.
- Keep personal data out. Our guide to whether ChatGPT is safe covers what not to share.
- Use AI to study, not to skip studying. Flashcards, quizzes and explanations help you learn; pasting in an essay prompt doesn’t.

Final verdict
The best AI tools for college students in 2026 start with Google’s free year of AI Pro or AI Plus, because it’s the biggest deal and it runs through December 31. US students should also grab four months of ChatGPT Plus before October 31, and coders should add GitHub Copilot Student. Fill the gaps with free plans from Claude, Notion and Figma, and pay for discounted tools only when a free one can’t do the job.
