TL;DR: iPhone Duo preorders opened on October 16 and Apple’s US online store ran out of 2026 delivery dates within about half an hour; new orders now show late-January delivery. Apple calls demand “nothing short of extraordinary.” The $1,999 foldable still launches in stores on October 23, so walk-in or pickup stock is your best shot this year. Early hands-on reviews are glowing on design and software, with the camera’s missing dedicated zoom lens the main complaint.
iPhone Duo preorders went live at 5 a.m. Pacific on Friday, October 16, and the first foldable iPhone sold through its launch allocation almost immediately. MacRumors reports that delivery dates slipped from October 23 to November within minutes and reached January 25 by 5:30 a.m. The Verge saw late-January dates for every configuration less than an hour after orders opened.
If you’re still deciding, here’s what the phone costs, what reviewers who have used it say, and the realistic ways to get one before 2027.
What Apple says about demand
In a statement to the Financial Times, quoted by MacRumors, Apple said demand for the iPhone Duo has been “nothing short of extraordinary” and that it is “working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.” Apple has not said how many units it built, and The Verge notes the delay could reflect high demand, tight supply, or both.
What we do know: the earliest orders ship on October 23, it’s no longer possible to order from Apple online for delivery in 2026, and Apple’s site tells shoppers to check back on October 24 for store pickup availability, per MacRumors.

- Cameras: 48MP Fusion Main with an optical-quality 2x option, 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen.
- Security and build: Touch ID in the side button (no Face ID), grade 5 titanium, IP68.
- Battery: two cells; Apple rates it at up to 31 hours of video on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer one.
- Connectivity: eSIM-only worldwide, Wi-Fi 7 via Apple’s N1 chip and the C2 modem.
Apple Pencil support is promised “later this year,” so don’t buy it as a note-taking device on day one. For the full launch rundown, see our original iPhone Duo price and specs report.

What the hands-on reviews say
Full reviews will land closer to the October 23 launch, but early hands-on impressions set expectations. Engadget’s Sam Rutherford titled his hands-on “Apple’s most exciting device in a decade.” The highlights and caveats from that piece:
The good
- The crease is faint. Rutherford found it “often easier to feel it with your finger than observe it with your eyes,” helped by the matte nano-texture coating.
- Software polish. He called multitasking “a breeze,” with split-screen, drag and drop between apps and saved app pairs that borrow from iPadOS.
- Thoughtful hardware details. Tent and tabletop modes, a top-mounted volume rocker that suits landscape use, and a camera bar that lets the phone sit flat without wobbling.
The trade-offs
- Weight and thickness. Engadget measured it at 11.3mm closed and 254 grams, versus 9.7mm and 201 grams for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8.
- No dedicated telephoto. His biggest gripe: there’s no longer zoom lens like the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
- Price. Engadget notes the Duo costs $100 less than a Z Fold Ultra but $100 more than the Z Fold 8.
Apple has also pushed back on crease worries directly; our piece on why Apple’s hardware chief says the crease isn’t the point covers the hinge and durability claims.
How to get an iPhone Duo sooner
- Check Apple Store pickup from October 24. Apple’s site says to check back then, according to MacRumors.
- Try walking in on October 23. The Verge notes Apple typically reserves some units for stores, though Apple hasn’t confirmed walk-in stock.
- Place an online order anyway. MacRumors points out Apple has sometimes shipped constrained iPhones earlier than quoted. An order holds your place in the queue while you hunt for store stock.
- Don’t chase specific configurations. The Verge saw late-January dates for every model, so switching color or storage online won’t get you an earlier date. Avoid marked-up resale listings while official stock is still arriving.
Should you preorder or wait?
Preorder if you already know you want a foldable iPhone and can live without a dedicated telephoto lens. A January delivery date is a long wait, but you can usually cancel an Apple online order before it ships if you find one in store sooner. Wait if you need Apple Pencil support on day one, care about weight, or want to see full reviews of battery life and long-term hinge durability. Apple also has more hardware coming at its October 28 launch, including a new iPad mini, so if a bigger screen is the main draw, it may be worth seeing that lineup first.
The bottom line
iPhone Duo preorders ran out of 2026 online delivery dates within minutes, and Apple is calling the demand extraordinary. The hardware and software impressions so far are strong, with weight, a missing dedicated zoom and a $1,999 starting price as the real trade-offs. If you want one this year, your best bets are in-store stock on October 23 and pickup slots from October 24.
