TL;DR: Minecraft Switch 2 arrives on October 27, 2026 as a native version for Nintendo’s newer console, with Mojang’s Vibrant Visuals graphics turned on by default and an updated Super Mario Mash-Up pack. If you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Switch, Mojang says you can get the digital Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 free (a token fee applies in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand) through the Nintendo eShop until the end of January 2027. Nintendo Wire lists new-buyer prices at $29.99, $39.99 and $49.99 for the three editions.
Minecraft Switch 2 owners have been playing the original Switch version in backward compatibility since the console launched. That changes tomorrow. Mojang Studios confirmed back in August that a native Nintendo Switch 2 version launches October 27, and with launch day here, this is everything you need to know: what is new, what each edition includes, how the free upgrade works and who is left out.
Minecraft Switch 2 release date and platforms
Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Pre-orders opened on October 7, according to Mojang’s pre-order announcement. It is available digitally through the Nintendo eShop and, per Nintendo Wire, at retail as a Game-Key Card release.
It is one of the bigger Switch 2 launches this week. Gaming Route lists Minecraft alongside Village in the Shade as October 27 Switch 2 releases.
What is new in the native Switch 2 version
Vibrant Visuals on by default
The headline feature is Vibrant Visuals, which Mojang calls Minecraft’s biggest graphics update to date. In its original announcement, Mojang said the native version is optimized for the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware and that Vibrant Visuals will be the default graphics setting. The update, first released in June 2025 alongside the Chase the Skies drop on other platforms, adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, moving shadows and reflections in water.
There is a catch. Mojang’s fine print says Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds and content. Couch co-op players will see the standard look.
An upgraded Super Mario Mash-Up pack
The Super Mario Mash-Up pack, which is exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft, is getting a Vibrant Visuals update. It brings Mario-themed textures, music and skins plus locations such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza. Mojang says every Switch 2 edition includes it.

Editions and prices
Mojang lists three digital versions. The contents below come from Mojang; prices are those reported by Nintendo Wire for players who are not eligible for the upgrade offer.
| Edition | Price (per Nintendo Wire) | What is included (per Mojang) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $29.99 | Minecraft for Switch 2 plus the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals |
| Deluxe Collection | $39.99 | Adds Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O’Blocks add-ons, 3 exclusive Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins |
| Ultimate Collection | $49.99 | Adds Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O’Blocks, Decocraft and Weapons + Tools add-ons, 5 exclusive Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins |
Mojang notes that Minecoins included with, or bought in, Minecraft on a Nintendo device must be used in the Nintendo ecosystem. Online multiplayer on console also requires the platform’s own subscription, sold separately.
How the free Switch 2 upgrade works
This is the part most existing players care about. According to Mojang:
- If you own a digital copy of Minecraft for the original Nintendo Switch, you can get the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2 for free.
- The offer runs until the end of January 2027 (Nintendo Wire gives the date as January 31, 2027).
- It is available only through the Nintendo eShop.
- Owners can upgrade to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection instead for a discounted fee.
- In Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, the upgrade costs a token 100 JPY, 30 NTD and 25 THB respectively, rather than being free.
Nintendo Wire also reports that save data from the Switch 1 version can be carried over to the new release, so your worlds should come with you.
Who does not get the free upgrade
Physical cartridge owners appear to be left out for now. Mojang’s offer is worded around digital copies, and Nintendo Wire says there is currently no word on an upgrade option for people who own Minecraft on a physical Switch cartridge. If that changes, expect Mojang to announce it on Minecraft.net.
Should you upgrade?
For most existing players, yes, simply because the Standard Edition upgrade costs nothing for digital owners outside Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. Here is a quick way to decide:
- You own Minecraft digitally on Switch 1: claim the free Standard Edition upgrade on the eShop before the January 2027 deadline.
- You want the add-ons anyway: compare the discounted Deluxe or Ultimate upgrade price in the eShop with buying add-ons separately.
- You own a physical cartridge: keep playing the Switch 1 version in backward compatibility, or wait to see whether Mojang adds an upgrade path.
- You mostly play split-screen: remember that Vibrant Visuals will not apply there, so the visual upgrade will matter less to you.
The bigger picture
The native release gives Switch 2 players a version of Minecraft that matches the visual features available on other modern platforms, and it lands in a busy stretch for Mojang’s game, which is also preparing its first new dimension in years. Minecraft has even become a testbed for AI research, as we saw when Google’s Gemini agents beat the game without human help.
For players, the takeaway is simple: if you bought Minecraft digitally on the first Switch, you can get the new version for free (or for a token fee in a few countries), and October 27 is the day to download it.
