It Takes Two supports online cross-play between PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 following the October 2026 update. The original Nintendo Switch version is excluded from that cross-play group. This is an important change: many older guides correctly said there was no cross-platform play when they were written, but that answer no longer describes the updated supported versions.

Before buying a second copy, check exactly which version each person will run. A console family, a console generation, and a game edition are different things. Two friends can own devices with similar names and still be looking at different multiplayer options. Start with the hardware and installed edition, then work through the invitation.

What changed for cross-platform multiplayer?

EA’s Nintendo Switch 2 launch announcement identifies the supported cross-play platforms and excludes original Switch. Its Switch 2 feature page also describes newly added cross-play. If a search result says that PlayStation and Xbox can never play together, check whether it predates that update.

A useful buying question is therefore, “Can these two updated editions join the same online session?” Asking only whether the game is cross-platform can hide the original Switch exception. It can also confuse online play with sitting together on the same sofa. Check subscriptions as well as platform compatibility; PlayStation Plus requirements for Helldivers 2 are a separate game’s example and should not be assumed to apply to It Takes Two.

Cross-play, cross-generation and local co-op

Cross-play means joining someone on a different supported platform, such as a PlayStation player teaming up with a PC player. Cross-generation means playing across generations in the same console family, such as PS4 and PS5. Local co-op means sharing one supported device and display, with appropriate controllers.

Think about the arrangement you actually want. If you and your partner are in one room, a local session might be simpler than configuring two online systems. If you live in different homes, online compatibility and each person’s account become the relevant checks. Neither arrangement makes the game a solo adventure: its challenges are designed around two people working together.

How Friend’s Pass fits in

Friend’s Pass allows a person who owns the full game to invite a friend who installs the pass. According to EA’s Friend’s Pass guidance, the invited player downloads the appropriate version from their platform’s store. One full-game owner is required for access to the full story together.

  1. Decide who will host using the full game.
  2. Confirm the other player’s platform belongs to the supported online group.
  3. Find the official Friend’s Pass listing in that player’s store.
  4. Install updates on both devices before starting.
  5. Follow the game’s account and invitation prompts.
  6. Have the owner send the invitation and let the invited player accept it.

Friend’s Pass is an access arrangement, not a promise that any two versions will connect. Downloading it does not remove the original Switch exception. Avoid buying another copy simply because an invitation fails once; check versions and accounts first.

What original Nintendo Switch owners should check

The original Switch edition deserves its own check rather than being grouped under the word Nintendo. EA distinguishes online cross-play on Switch 2 from GameShare arrangements involving original Switch hardware. These are different ways of connecting players and should not be treated as interchangeable.

If you own the Switch game and have moved to Switch 2, read EA’s upgrade terms for your region and ownership type. Verify the edition shown on the console before arranging a remote session. An upgrade offer, a local sharing feature and an online subscription are separate parts of the setup.

For example, imagine one friend says, “I have a Switch,” while the other assumes that means Switch 2. They might spend an evening troubleshooting a combination that was never the intended cross-play setup. Asking for the precise model at the beginning saves that confusion.

Check these details before an online session

EA’s play guide explains the basic local and online arrangements. Review platform membership requirements on the store screen for the edition you use. Requirements for online console play are separate from whether your friend owns the full game.

  • Game version: Finish pending downloads and updates.
  • Account: Check that you are using the account intended for this session.
  • Invitation: Read the exact on-screen instructions rather than relying on an older video’s menu names.
  • Connection: Make sure both people can reach the game’s online features.
  • Session time: Agree on enough time to complete setup without rushing through account prompts.

If the game displays an error, write down its exact wording. “My friend cannot join” is harder to diagnose than a message identifying a missing update or unavailable online service. Take a screenshot with account identifiers hidden before asking support.

If the invitation still fails

Work from the simplest explanation to the more involved one. Check that the invited player has launched the correct pass, that both players have completed first-run setup, and that the owner is sending the invitation from the full game. Restart the game after an update before repeating the attempt.

Next, compare what each person sees. One player may be waiting in an account sign-in screen while the other expects an invitation notification. Reading the screens aloud can expose that mismatch. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which step helped.

Do not unlink accounts or erase saved progress merely as an experiment. If the problem remains, use official EA or platform support with the hardware models, game editions, error message and steps already tried. That provides a useful report without risking unrelated progress.

Frequently asked questions

Can PS5 and Xbox players play It Takes Two together?

Updated supported versions belong to the cross-play group announced for October 2026. Check that both games are updated and follow the current invitation flow.

Does the invited friend need to buy the full game?

Not when joining a full-game owner through the appropriate Friend’s Pass. Confirm you are downloading the pass rather than a different store listing.

Can original Switch join PC through the new cross-play feature?

EA excludes original Nintendo Switch from the announced cross-play group. Switch 2 support should not be read as support for every Switch edition.

Why do older articles say there is no cross-play?

They may describe the game before its later update. Compare their timeframe with EA’s current announcement instead of assuming one answer applies to every version forever.
