If you want to change the email used for your Apple ID, now called Apple Account, open Settings, tap your name, choose Sign-In & Security and edit the primary email address. If you mean signing into a completely different account, pause first: that is a different change with consequences for synced data and services.
People use “change my Apple ID” to describe several tasks. You may have an outdated email address, want a different account for purchases, or be preparing a phone for another person. Identify which job you actually need before signing out of anything.
Choose the change that matches your goal
- New email, same person: update the existing account’s primary email.
- Forgotten password: use Apple’s password-reset process rather than creating another account.
- Different person using the phone: review the proper transfer and sign-out process.
- Separate purchase account: inspect Media & Purchases and understand which account owns the content.
A simple example is changing from a college email address to a personal email address. You usually want to keep the same account, purchases and contacts while changing the address associated with it. Signing into an unrelated account would introduce unnecessary complications.
Change the primary email on your iPhone
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Choose Sign-In & Security.
- Tap the primary email address.
- Follow the option to change which address is primary, or remove the old address if that is appropriate.
- Choose an existing address on the account or add a new one.
- Complete the on-screen verification for the new address.
Apple’s primary-email guide recommends using a trusted device when possible and explains that changing the primary address does not remove access to your account’s contacts, purchases or other account information. The address cannot already belong to a different Apple Account. If you are changing accounts because of a disputed purchase, first review Apple's refund process using the account that made the purchase.
Read the options before confirming. Keeping an old address associated with the same account while choosing a new primary address is different from removing that old address entirely. Your choice should reflect whether you still control and want to receive communications at it.
Prepare the new email address first
Open the new inbox and make sure you can receive mail before beginning. Check that you entered the address correctly, including any punctuation. A mistyped address can turn a straightforward account update into a verification problem.
If you no longer control the old mailbox, do not use that mailbox as your only plan for receiving important account messages. Review the trusted phone numbers and devices associated with your account as part of the same maintenance session. Keep your own recovery information current rather than relying on another person’s account.
Apple’s guide to account email addresses distinguishes primary and additional addresses. An additional address can serve a different purpose from the address that receives account communications. Check the actual role shown in settings rather than treating every listed email as interchangeable.
Use the Apple Account website when appropriate
You can start from account.apple.com and sign in. The website may direct you to a trusted device to complete sensitive account changes. If it offers account editing on the web, inspect Sign-In and Security and Email & Phone Numbers.
Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you trust. Do not follow an unexpected email link asking you to “confirm” a change you did not request. An email update should happen inside Apple’s official account settings, not in a conversation with someone claiming to be support.
When you mean a completely different Apple Account
Signing out is a broader operation. Apple’s sign-out guidance explains that it affects iCloud and related services, including the App Store, iMessage and FaceTime. A paired Apple Watch can be affected too. Review the on-screen information before proceeding.
Before changing accounts, confirm that important photos, contacts, files and notes are available in the place you expect. Syncing and keeping a local copy are not the same thing. Do not merge someone else’s personal data into your own account just to make the sign-in screen disappear.
If you are transferring the iPhone to a new owner, use Apple’s dedicated preparation instructions rather than treating the process as a casual account switch. If this is a work or school phone, ask the administrator about management requirements before changing the account it uses.
Check your services after an email change
Return to account settings and confirm the intended address is primary. Check that you can receive Apple communications at the new inbox. Then review the services you use most, such as Messages and FaceTime, and verify the addresses at which people can reach you.
Let important contacts know if you removed an old reachable address. A colleague may continue sending an iMessage or invitation to the address saved in their contact card. Explaining the new contact information is more effective than waiting for missed messages to reveal the mismatch.
Apple’s account-management overview also recommends keeping account details current. Use the occasion to check trusted devices and contact information, but avoid changing every security setting at once. A clear record of what you updated makes troubleshooting easier.
If the new address is unavailable or verification fails
Check the spelling and whether you or a family member already use the address for a different account. An unavailable address does not mean that repeatedly creating new accounts will solve the issue. Follow the message Apple displays and the official support route for your account.
For a missing verification message, inspect the correct inbox and junk folder, then use the available resend option. Never send a verification code to another person to have them “finish” the change. If you are locked out, use account recovery rather than guessing at settings from a second account.
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple ID the same as Apple Account?
Apple renamed Apple ID to Apple Account. The new name does not require everyone to create a replacement account.
Will changing the primary email remove my purchases?
Changing the address on the same account preserves the account information described in Apple’s guide. Signing into a different account is a separate situation.
Do I have to sign out just to change my email?
Use the primary-email controls in Sign-In & Security first. Do not sign out merely because an older tutorial begins that way.
What if I forgot the password?
Start with Apple’s password-reset or recovery process. Creating another account does not restore access to purchases and information in the original one.
