TL;DR: If Windows 11 is stuck on the welcome screen after you enter your PIN or password, force a few restarts to reach Windows Recovery, then try Safe Mode, Startup Repair, System Restore, uninstall recent apps/drivers, and only then Reset this PC (Keep my files). A hung “Welcome” animation usually means a login script, display driver, antivirus or profile service failed — not a wiped disk.
When Windows 11 is stuck on the welcome screen, the PC has usually authenticated you and then stalled while loading the desktop shell. Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting and Safe Mode docs cover the recovery path; ASUS and other OEMs publish the same WinRE sequence for devices that never finish “Welcome.” Work through the fixes below in order so you don’t jump straight to a reset.
Quick checks before recovery mode
- Wait 10–15 minutes once. First boot after a big update can sit on Welcome while Component Store work finishes. If the spinner never moves and the disk light is idle, move on.
- Disconnect docks, USB drives, printers and secondary monitors. Bad peripherals can hang Explorer or GPU init.
- Try another account if you have a local admin. A corrupted user profile often affects only one account.
- Hard power cycle three times: hold the power button 10 seconds to shut down, wait 10 seconds, power on. After a few failed boots Windows should open Automatic Repair / WinRE.
Get into Safe Mode from the sign-in screen
Microsoft’s guide Start your PC in safe mode in Windows is the cleanest path when the sign-in UI still appears:
- On the sign-in screen, hold Shift while you select Power → Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
If you never reach the sign-in screen, interrupt boot three times to force WinRE, then use the same Advanced options path.

Eight fixes that usually clear a Welcome hang
| # | Fix | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Boot Safe Mode, uninstall the last app/driver | Hang started after GPU, VPN or antivirus install |
| 2 | Run Windows Update in Safe Mode with Networking | Partial cumulative update left services broken |
| 3 | Startup Repair from WinRE | Boot configuration or early-launch drivers damaged |
| 4 | System Restore to a point before the issue | You have restore points; recent change is the trigger |
| 5 | Disable non-Microsoft startup items (Task Manager) | Explorer loads after Safe Mode but not normal boot |
| 6 | Update or roll back the display driver | Welcome appears, then black/stuck with GPU fans spinning |
| 7 | Check disk health (chkdsk /f) from Command Prompt in WinRE | Clicks/noise, sudden power loss, or storage errors |
| 8 | Reset this PC → Keep my files | Everything else failed; last nondestructive option |
1–2. Remove the last change in Safe Mode
In Safe Mode, open Settings → Apps and remove anything installed the day the hang began (new antivirus, “cleaner,” VPN, RGB suite). Then open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU → Uninstall device (check “Attempt to remove the driver”), reboot normally and let Windows reinstall a basic display driver. Microsoft’s broader sign-in troubleshooting page is worth a skim if PIN/password entry itself fails — a different problem than Welcome hanging after a correct PIN.
3–4. Startup Repair and System Restore
From WinRE: Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair. If that reports it couldn’t repair your PC, go back and pick System Restore. Pick a restore point from before the Welcome loop. Per Microsoft’s recovery options overview, restore undoes system changes but keeps personal files.
5–6. Startup apps and GPU drivers
If Safe Mode works, open Task Manager → Startup apps and disable non-Microsoft entries. For GPU issues, download the current driver package from Intel, AMD or Nvidia on another PC, put it on a USB stick, and install after a clean uninstall in Safe Mode. New AI PCs and Arm Windows devices can be pickier about early GPU init — something we’re also seeing around the RTX Spark laptop wave.
7. Check the disk from WinRE Command Prompt
Advanced options → Command Prompt, then:
chkdsk C: /f /r
Confirm and reboot when asked. Bad sectors can stall profile loading forever.
8. Reset this PC (Keep my files)
WinRE → Troubleshoot → Reset this PC → Keep my files → Cloud download or Local reinstall. This reinstalls Windows while keeping personal documents. Apps will need reinstalling. Use Remove everything only when you’re ready to wipe.
Still stuck? Profile vs hardware
- One account hangs, another works: rename the broken profile folder from Safe Mode and create a new local admin (advanced; back up Desktop/Documents first).
- Every account hangs, including Safe Mode: suspect storage, RAM or a failing drive. Run the OEM diagnostics or swap the drive.
- BitLocker prompt appears: have your recovery key from your Microsoft account before you continue with repair tools.
Prevent the next Welcome loop
- Install GPU and chipset drivers from the OEM or GPU vendor, not random “driver booster” sites.
- Pause nonessential apps during Feature Updates.
- Keep a current backup (File History, OneDrive Desktop/Documents, or a full image).
- Create a winRE USB installer when the PC is healthy so you’re not hunting media mid-outage.
The bottom line
Windows 11 stuck on the welcome screen is almost always recoverable without wiping your files: force WinRE, boot Safe Mode, undo the last driver or app, run Startup Repair or System Restore, then Reset only if needed. Start with peripherals unplugged and Safe Mode before you reinstall — most Welcome hangs are a bad startup item or GPU driver, not a dead SSD.
