That’s the headline number from the Mission Efficiency, a prototype VW actually built and actually drove from Wolfsburg to Vienna instead of just simulating on a spec sheet.
The car is a 2+2. Two proper front seats, and a back row that’s realistically only usable by kids or anyone under about 5’3″. This isn’t a family hauler. It’s a rolling argument about how much range you can squeeze out of a battery if you stop treating aerodynamics and weight as an afterthought.
The numbers, and they’re genuinely strange
Under ideal lab conditions, Mission Efficiency hits 323 MPGe. On the actual Vienna trip, in real traffic and real weather, it still managed 279 MPGe, working out to 7.51 kWh per 100 miles. Its drag coefficient is 0.158, which is remarkably low for anything with four wheels, and its frontal area is a tight 2.08 square meters. The battery is a relatively modest 54.9 kWh, yet the car is rated for more than 400 miles of range because it simply doesn’t waste much energy pushing through air.
For comparison, the Lucid Air Pure currently holds the title of most efficient production EV on the market. Mission Efficiency is nearly twice as efficient. Solar cells on the roof add a little extra, about 18 miles under perfect sunny, flat, constant-speed conditions, which is a nice bonus more than a real contributor.
What it borrowed from Slate
The most interesting decision here isn’t aerodynamic, it’s psychological. Volkswagen stripped the infotainment system entirely. No built-in touchscreen media hub, no built-in speakers. Instead, drivers get a portable Bluetooth speaker they bring into the car themselves. It’s the exact same move Slate Auto made with its budget pickup truck: cut the expensive, heavy, complexity-adding tech that most buyers replace with their phone anyway.
That’s a bet that efficiency-focused buyers will accept less built-in tech if it buys them meaningfully more range. Whether mainstream buyers will make the same trade is a much bigger question than whether the engineering works.
What’s missing: a price, a date, anything concrete
Volkswagen hasn’t announced pricing or a production timeline for Mission Efficiency. History offers a hint of how cautious to be here: the company’s last efficiency halo car, the XL1, only ever saw 250 units built, starting around 110,000 euros back in 2013. Concept efficiency and showroom reality have historically lived pretty far apart at Volkswagen.
